Starbucks... Coming to a Disney Theme Park Near You

How about some Starbucks with your Mickey Mouse? For some people, like moms and pops, Starbucks coming to Disney Theme Parks may be a saving grace. After all coffee just may very well perk up “the happiest place on earth.” Maybe?

The Seattle-based coffee giant announced on Monday, it has formed a partnership with six Disney properties in California and Florida and will be opening a store inside of each. It is reported that the first will open this summer at Disneyland California Adventure in Anaheim. The other locations will be at the nearby Disneyland Park and at the parks in Orlando, Fla. – Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. The companies are still finalizing when the remaining stores will open.

Starbucks Corp. and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a unit of The Walt Disney Co., did not disclose the financial terms of the deal. What is next? Starbucks invading our brains, probably.

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew

Starbucks now offers a line of “Ready Brew” drinks that you simply put in water and go. I have tried some of the coffees and enjoy them quite a bit. They’re handy and convenient and perfect for drinking on the go. One drink I’m eager to try is the caramel flavored iced coffee!

Starbucks states:

Using 100% natural roasted arabica beans, we created a blend of instant and microground coffee that is specially designed for mixing with cold water. Then we added just the right amount of buttery, velvety caramel flavor and pure cane sugar for the perfect balance of refreshment and sweetness

Since I’m a huge fan of: caramel, Starbucks, coffee and iced coffee I have to try to this soon! It sounds like the perfect Christmas stocking stuffer for the coffee drinkers in my life as well.

The leader in stellar coffee brewing is now making Starbucks coffee pods.

Starbucks coffee pods can be used with a variety of new coffee brewers on the market. These include the Senseo machine from Philips in Europe, which has been all the rage in Europe for the last few years. Philips is in the process of bringing this machine into the United States for about the same price as your standard drip machine. Appliance makers like Black & Decker, Krups, Mr. Coffee, and Hamilton Beach are all getting into the mix.

The system forces steaming water through ground beans at super high pressure. It’s the same technique that most leading coffeehouses use the most because it makes consistently a top-notch, single serving of coffee in under a minute. It is truly amazing all of the benefits. First, you use self-contained, individual Starbucks coffee pods and turn them into tasty coffee that you’ll be proud to share with your houseguests.

The Starbucks coffee pods system also allows you to customize the cup size and cup strength of every cup of joe. Choose from a cup size, for example, of seven ounces, nine ounces, or 14 ounces. Decide on a light breakfast blend, an afternoon pick me up strength, or the toe clenching, rocket fuel variety of brew. It makes it a cinch to brew a precisely measured portion of coffee. You won’t have to worry about the problem of wasting an entire pot of coffee.

Chemical engineers at the University of Nevada say they’ve made a high quality biodiesel from coffee grounds. The researchers estimate their process could produce about 340 million gallons of biodiesel from coffee world wide, and they could make about $8 million in profits just from Starbuck’s coffee grounds.

In the not-too-distant future, University of Nevada, Reno researcher Manoranjan Misra can envision a day when customers might pull into the drive-through at Starbucks for a cup of coffee … and then fill their cars with biodiesel made from the same coffee grounds that produced their tasty latte.

Misra, a professor of chemical and metallurgical engineering, has developed a novel process – believed to be the first of its kind in the country – to extract high-quality biodiesel from spent coffee grounds.

Misra’s process has important implications in the world’s efforts to combat global warming through the creation of alternative fuels such as biodiesel.
What sets his work apart from other biodiesel efforts is the high quality of the biodiesel extracted from coffee grounds. The process also utilizes an inexpensive waste product, thus reducing overall cost.

“We have found that biodiesel created from spent coffee grounds is stable over a longer period of time than other forms of biodiesel that have been created from feed stocks such as soy and corn,” Misra said. “Biodiesel from spent coffee grounds is a low-cost ‘green’ form of fuel that shows a significant reduction of carbon dioxide emission. It’s an excellent source for biodiesel.”

Using Starbucks as an example, Misra said that the coffee-making giant generates more than 200 million pounds of spent coffee grounds per year in the United States.

“We estimate that this could produce almost 3 million gallons of biodiesel per year,” Misra said.

Misra’s process, which has been patented, involves two simple steps: the extraction of oil from the spent coffee grounds, and then the conversion of the oil to biodiesel.

He said that the produced oil is a triglyceride, which is the chemical form in which most fat exists in food. The triglycleride-rich oil easily lends itself to biodiesel conversion, and serves as an agent to reduce carbon dioxide emissions when it is burned as fuel.

Removal of one pound of triglyceride from coffee grounds would reduce about three pounds of carbon dioxide, making it a highly effective agent in battling the continued accumulation of greenhouse gases, Misra said.
Worldwide, the potential for the new “coffee” biodiesel is great, Misra said.

He noted that about 15 billion pounds of coffee is consumed in the world; of this, the new technology could potentially produce more than 200 million gallons of biodiesel. In northern Nevada alone, about 70 million pounds of coffee is produced at the Starbucks roasting plant in the Carson Valley.

Misra said he created the technology almost by accident.

“I had left my coffee out one night, and the next morning, I noticed that there was a kind of oil around the edge of the cup,” he said. “Every cup of coffee has it. I decided to do some tests on the oil.”

He discovered that the oil, rich in triglycerides, could be easily converted to biodiesel.

“The oil still smells like coffee,” he said. “It doesn’t change a lot during the process.”

Is Coffee Appropriate For Kids?

I didn’t start drinking coffee until I was in my 20s. Of course, growing up in the 80s coffee wasn’t the phenomenon it is now. Kids didn’t have to “get their Starbucks” before school, and my only experience with coffee was the bitter stuff my Dad drank.

So how young is too young?

Here’s one informal poll that surprises me.

So who’s right?

I don’t have the answer. But I am glad I don’t have kids–no “but so and so gets to drink coffee!” fights.

I’m all in favor of big corporations that donate to worthy causes. Even in tough times, it’s nice to see people giving back. While I’m not a huge fan of Starbucks approach to business (put every Mom & Pop coffee shop out of business), I am a fan of their recently-launched campaign to raise money for AIDS research.

Every time someone buys a (Starbucks) RED™ Exclusive beverage at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada, from November 27 through January 2, Starbucks gives 5¢ to the Global Fund to help save lives in Africa.

Today, December 1, which is officially World AIDS Day, every hand-crafted Starbucks beverage sold will generate a 5¢ donation to the cause.

Paying It Backwards Strikes Starbucks

Maybe it’s just a really good publicity stunt, but it seems that at at least one Starbucks (in Loveland, Colorado), the customers are paying it backwards, a concept that can frequently be found at toll booths.

But today’s tough times notwithstanding, it seems that the customers at a local Loveland Starbucks are passing the bucks at the drive-thru–by paying for the person’s order behind them.

According to 9NEWS.com, which interviewed one of the employees at the Starbucks in question, the phenomenon has been known to go through 15 cars.

It just goes to show that no gesture is too small, and even in hard times, people are trying to take care of each other however they can.
