Starting out as a small coffee shop in Vermont, Green Mountain Coffee has grown to become synonymous with gourmet coffee with a social conscious. Since its inception in 1981 as a small coffee shop, the Green Mountain Coffee company has reached record sales of over three hundred fifty million dollars worldwide.

Being environmentally responsible is one of the key aspects of Green Mountain Coffee. This company takes environmental responsibility seriously, for them it is not a marketing ploy or trendy move to gain attention. It is simply a part of their core values and what has made them one of the top gourmet coffees in the world.

Green Mountain Coffee

Green Mountain Coffee employees practice environmentally friendly standards such as using recycled materials, composting their coffee grounds and offering organic products to consumers. The company has an Earth –friendly coffee filter that is dioxin free.

One of the biggest successes Green Mountain Coffee can claim is being named one of the top 100 most socially conscious businesses. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters are certified organic and are committed to providing top quality organic coffee.

Green Mountain Coffee is also committed to supporting sustainable coffee and is a member of the Fair Trade Association. Over 20% of the coffee offered by Green Mountain is Fair Trade Certified. This is important to the environment because Fair Trade coffee growers have made a commitment to using only environmentally friendly growing methods including sustainability methods. By making this commitment they are promised a set price for their coffees. This works out for both the coffee producer who is yielding less coffee per crop due to the methods and the consumer who is assured they are doing their part in helping the environmental causes.

Green Mountain Coffee has taken their environmental responsibility seriously, going beyond its coffee sources and making sure their own local production facilities and shops are being as environmentally friendly as possible. Composting their waste, recycling and purchasing recycled materials are just a few of the methods Green Mountain employs.

Green Mountain Coffee also created a disposable coffee cup that is made of entirely natural or renewable materials. This is in direct contrast to typical disposable coffee cups that are made using petroleum products to make them waterproof. This is simply another indication of Green Mountain’s dedication to the environment and sustainability.
In addition recycling and using all natural materials, Green Mountain uses renewable energy sources whenever possible and also purchases carbon credits to offset their energy use. These energy credits are used to research alternate energy power.

Green Mountain Coffee is more than delicious coffee. It is a company dedicated to preserving the natural resources of the Earth for future generations while at the same time providing top quality, Fair Trade coffee products to people around the world.

This is your last chance to buy Peet’s Burundi—a berry perfumed and caramel textured East African coffee redolent of Kenya’s berry perfume, but with the bold, caramel texture enjoyed in Burundi.

Tucked in between Rwanda and Tanzania, Burundi sits in the heart of that grouping of East African jewels which consistently provides interesting African flavors: berries and body, clarity and heft.

Given the country’s remote location, it is difficult to get coffee out on time to be savored at the peak of the season. But Peet’s managed to do so, because Burundi coffees are at their finest this time of year.

According to Peet’s, the coffee is so good they are making it the heart of their upcoming Anniversary Blend—but it’s a treat to taste alone, so they’re also offering the top pick of the lot for one last roast.

Order online here by Tuesday, March 3, for the last roast.

Named for the indigenous Batak ethnic farmers, Peet’s Sumatra Blue Batak is a super-select coffee that grows in the Lake Toba region of North Sumatra.

Unroasted, it takes on a deep blue hue due to a unique form of processing developed in Indonesia called “wet-hulling”, which enables faster drying (this is critical, as it rains a lot in Sumatra). It also helps develop a profound, syrupy body.

Sumptuously full-bodied with the richness of late harvest dessert wine and the heady aroma of sweet, cured tobacco, this hand selected coffee won’t be available for very long.

Order online here by Tuesday, March 3, for the last roast.

Since I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, I am constantly amazed at what artists come up with. That’s why this new find has me beaming ear to ear.

Kentucky artists Josie Lamb Williams and Mark Williams of Mayapple Creations say they are driven to build a stronger connection between the natural and human world, and their organic, intricate jewelry is a manifestation of this desire. All of the shapes in the jewelry are based on ancient symbols, and shapes found in nature.

The concept of Fair Trade refers to an equitable and fair partnership between consumers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

One of the ideals behind the Fair Trade movement is ensuring that the vast majority of the world’s coffee farmers (who are small holders) get a fair price for their harvests in order to achieve a decent living wage. Fair Trade guarantees to poor farmers organized in cooperatives around the world: a living wage (minimum price of $1.26/pound regardless of the volatile market); much needed credit at fair prices; and long term relationships.
These fair payments are invested in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and economic independence.

Fair Trade Certified coffee is the first product being introduced in the U.S. with an independently monitored system to ensure that it was produced under fair labor conditions.

Coffee is the first commodity in the United States for which there is an independent monitor that guarantees that producers were paid a fair wage for their product and work in decent conditions — a real alternative to sweatshops.

Across the country, there are over 100 companies that have licensing agreements with TransFair to offer Fair Trade Certified coffee. Major roasters include Starbucks, Tully’s, Peet’s, Equal Exchange, Diedrich, and Green Mountain, serving over 7,000 retail locations, with volumes rising every day.

Small farmers are the best stewards of the land. When you support Fair Trade, you support the environment. Fair Trade farmers don’t have the capital input to clear forests, buy chemical fertilizers and pesticides. They generally grow small plots of mixed-crop, shade grown coffee organically.

In addition to the above-mentioned places to purchase a Fair Trade cup of joe, there are two great online options: Global Exchange Store and TransFair USA.

So the next time you’re buying a cup of coffee or beans, ask for Fair Trade or look for the Fair Trade label, and help small coffee growers continue to thrive.
