The majority of coffee sold in coffee shops and retail grocers for home use is ground coffee. However, consumers have very little control over how fresh the coffee is because they have no idea when it was ground. Ground coffee has been the only way to purchase coffee for decades. Only in the past decade has there been the option of purchasing coffee beans and grinding them at home.

Ground coffee offers coffee drinkers the convenience of being ready to go straight into the coffee filter basket for brewing. For many years it was sold in cans that were supposed to protect the flavor and keep it fresh. Then, distributors began packing it in airtight packages that resembled bricks, once opened the coffee had to be stored in an airtight container to help keep its freshness. Today, it is sold in air locked bags that are resealable or in airtight plastic containers that are designed for storage and freshness.

Regardless of the type of container is shipped and stored in, it is still impossible for consumers to know how long the coffee has been ground. Fresh ground coffee should ideally be used within a few days of grinding it. This is simply not possible to do with ground coffee purchased in the grocery store. Considering that after the grinding process the coffee has to be sent to a packaging company and then to a distributor who will then deliver it to the grocery store. There are often weeks in between these stages where the coffee is sitting in warehouses waiting. These time periods add to the disintegration of the coffee’s flavor.

Consumers didn’t realize the difference that buying fresh coffee grounds and grinding them at home could make to the taste of their coffee. They readily accepted ground coffee bricks as top quality and didn’t question it. Then, as coffee distributors began to offer coffee beans and grinders the consumer realized the difference and began to demand higher quality.

Ground coffee is still the number one seller in coffee but the trend toward freshly ground coffee beans has forced coffee distributors to make improvements in their packaging. They have to find more innovative ways to keep their coffee fresher longer and get it to the retailer faster to insure this freshness.

In the end the consumer who wants the freshest possible coffee will purchase coffee beans and either grinds them at the retailer or purchases a coffee grinder and grinds them as they are needed. The latter being the only way to insure the freshest coffee possible.

The coffee bean may be the most important ingredient in a great cup of coffee but the coffee grind is what makes the coffee exquisite. Coffee beans must be ground in order to be used for making coffee. How they are ground up determines the flavor and consistency of the coffee. Some people prefer a very fine grind while others use a coarser grind.

Coffee beans can be ground at the grocer or coffee shop after being purchased or they can be ground at home using a coffee grinder. The rule of thumb for an excellent cup or pot of coffee is to only grind as enough coffee for the pot that is being brewed. This keeps the coffee beans fresh, once the coffee is ground the flavor is released and if not used quickly can dissipate leaving bland coffee.

Practically all coffee shops grind their own coffee. In fact, their espresso machines are typically outfitted with built-in grinders. Home users can purchase coffee grinders to use with their fresh coffee beans. Before purchasing a grinder, it is important that the different types of grinders be explored and that they understand the differences in them.

The conical burr grinder is considered the best grinder to use for flavor and aroma. It is also the most expensive of the grinders. Conical burr grinders have speed controls that help to prevent scorching of the coffee beans. If the grinder that is used moves to fast and can’t be slowed down, the resulting coffee can have a burnt taste.

The burr grinder is much faster than the conical burr grinder but are more economical and often the choice for home grinders. These do not create as fine of a grind as other grinders.

Blade grinders are another choice in coffee bean grinders and are the fastest ones available on the market today. The resulting coffee using this type of grinder contains both large and small coffee granules. The blade grinder does produce a large amount of coffee dust that will clog the coffee machines and so blade grinders are best used for drip coffee makers.

Home coffee grinders should have speed controls or at least a pulsing action. If the coffee is allowed to grind at a fast speed without any control the chances are high that it will have a burnt taste, which ruins the coffee. Pulsating blade grinders are typically what are used in homes. These allow the user to control how long the grinding burst lasts and creates a better grind with no burnt taste.

Just as the coffee bean selection is important so is the coffee grind, if the coffee grounds are burnt or not fine enough or even too fine, the resulting cup of coffee will not be up to the expectations of the coffee drinker. Choose a grinder that will allow control over the speed of the coffee grind to achieve the best ground coffee.

For the coffee lover willing to hand-grind beans the old-fashioned way for coffee perfection, there’s Peugeot.

Why Grind?

All the experts say that the way to achieve the best flavor in your coffee is to use coffee grinders. Coffee grinders unleash the bean oils and aromas right before you make a pot. It’s like getting a fresh cup from a coffeehouse each and every time you make a pot in the comfort of your kitchen. And of course, to get the taste of the best coffeehouse, you’ll want to use the best coffee grinders: Peugeot coffee grinders.

Let us explain. Peugeot coffee grinders are the old-fashioned manual kind. And when it comes to releasing the most coffee bean oils and aromas, manual grinders have an advantage compared to the more efficient electric grinders. Manual grinders have a type of conical burrs, which serve to break up the beans more slowly. On the other hand, faster grinding, or the continuous grinding of electric blades, creates heat from the friction and can alter the taste of the coffee.

For your typical automatic drip coffeemakers, and for other types of machines where there is room to work when it comes to the fineness of grinds needed, inexpensive electric bladed grinders can be adequate. To use these and get a more even grind, just make sure to shake them as they are grinding. This will help more of the coarse pieces of beans contact the blade. Still, for machines that need delicately and exactly ground coffee beans, hand grinding is key. That’s where Peugeot coffee grinders come in.
